Our Agency Philosophy

We build businesses.
Not just websites.

A platform-agnostic, strategy-first philosophy for subscription founders who want a partner whose incentives point the same direction theirs do - toward revenue, not a platform bill.

Alex Fleck - Subscription Scale founder and growth advisor

The Foundational Principle

Entrepreneur-first.
Always.

Before we are builders, we are entrepreneurs. We have started, run, and scaled subscription businesses of our own - so we think like operators, not like a vendor closing a ticket. When you work with us, you are not handed a deliverable; you are partnered with someone who treats your business the way they treat their own.

That is the single biggest difference between us and The Subscription Agency. They are a sales channel for a platform - their job ends when you are on the plan. Ours begins there. We coach the founder, not just the build, because a subscription business compounds only when the person running it makes better decisions quarter after quarter.

It is also why we teach. Alex has spent years coaching young - and not so young - entrepreneurs: as the founder of Subscription Secrets, as Entrepreneur in Residence at Susquehanna University (2018-2023), and in other founder-coaching roles. That work shapes every engagement here.

The Path Here

Two decades of operating, building, and coaching subscription businesses.

Subscription Scale is not a pivot. It is the culmination of 20+ years of psychology, design, sales, agency work, and hands-on subscription entrepreneurship.

2000 - 2004

Psychology Degree

Studied psychology first. Everything that followed, from offer design to retention engineering, is built on understanding how people decide, what motivates them, and why they stay.

2003 - 2006

Design & Sales Specialist

Specialized in design and sales, learning the craft of brand and persuasion, the work that turns attention into conversion long before any code is written.

2005 - present

Agency Owner

Founded and have run an agency for 20+ years, building websites and growth systems for clients across industries, and learning what actually moves the needle.

2010

First Subscription Launch

Launched a first subscription business of my own, learning the model, the churn, and the unit economics the hard way, hands-on.

2018 - 2023

Entrepreneur in Residence

Entrepreneur in Residence at Susquehanna University, coaching the next generation of founders and sharpening the operator-first philosophy.

2020

Second Subscription Launch

Launched a second subscription venture, applying everything the first taught about retention, lifecycle, and compounding growth.

2022 - present

Subscription Scale Specialist Focus

Focused the agency exclusively on subscription growth, founding Subscription Scale and the Subscription Secrets coaching program for subscription operators.

The Ethos

Four principles we will not trade.

These are not features. They are the operating commitments that decide whether your growth compounds - or stalls.

Platform-agnostic

We recommend the stack that fits your business - Subbly, Shopify, WooCommerce, Kajabi, Circle, or custom - not the one that pays us.

Retention-first

The website is 10% of the work. The other 90% - churn engineering, lifecycle automation, win-back flows - is where compounding growth actually happens.

Operator-led

You work directly with an operator who has run and scaled subscription businesses for 20+ years. No junior hand-offs, no account managers.

Stays past launch

Launch is the starting line. Quarterly roadmaps and ongoing optimization are the partnership, not an upsell.

Platform-Agnostic vs. Platform-Locked

The choice that defines your growth.

Most subscription agencies are, in practice, sales arms for a single platform. Their business model is built on moving you onto one stack's monthly plan - and keeping you there. The platform pays them, or owns them, or both. Either way, their incentive is not your revenue. It is your platform MRR.

We are platform-agnostic. We do not earn a commission for putting you on Subbly, Shopify, WooCommerce, Kajabi, Circle, or a custom build. We recommend the stack that fits your business model, your stage, and your economics - and if you are already on the right one, we tell you. That distinction sounds small. It changes everything downstream.

A platform-locked agency cannot tell you that the platform it sells is wrong for you. It will not recommend the competitor that would serve you better. It will not engineer the retention work that happens to be hard on its platform. Its advice is bounded by its inventory. Yours should not be.

The 90% of subscription growth that actually compounds - retention engineering, churn intervention, lifecycle automation, offer design, A/B testing - is platform-shaped but not platform-owned. A locked agency skips it or fakes it, because the platform's monthly plan is the product, not your growth curve. We do that work, on whatever stack it lives on, because your retention is our retainer.

Then there is the day after launch. A locked agency hands you off at go-live - the build is the deliverable, the relationship ends. We stay. Quarterly roadmaps, continuous optimization, and direct operator access are not upsells; they are the partnership. Launch is the starting line, not the finish line.

And there is the trust layer. A locked agency that publishes testimonials you cannot verify - synthetic faces, founders who do not exist - is asking you to take its word over your own diligence. We publish real founders, at real companies, with real photos, who will take your call. If the social proof is fabricated, the strategy probably is too.

Pick the agency whose incentives point the same direction yours do: toward your revenue, not your platform bill. That is the only philosophy that compounds.

Platform-Locked

Platform-Agnostic

Paid by the platform to drive adoption - not your revenue.

Paid by you, for your growth. No platform commission, ever.

Recommends the one stack it sells, regardless of fit.

Recommends the stack that fits your model, stage, and economics.

Skips or fakes the retention work that is hard on its platform.

Engineers retention on whatever stack it lives on.

Hands off at launch - the build is the deliverable.

Stays partnered: quarterly roadmaps, continuous optimization.

Publishes testimonials you cannot verify - synthetic faces, founders who do not exist.

Real founders, real companies, real photos - who will take your call.

Real Client Testimonials

Working with Alex has really changed the way I think about my business. He's not just someone who builds my website or gives me marketing advice. He has taken the time to really understand my business, my customers, our subscription model, our seasonal patterns, and where I ultimately want to take the company.

What I appreciate most is that he doesn't approach my business with a generic formula. He understands that Cozy Crafter Crates is unique, and he looks at the whole picture: customer behavior, psychology, pricing, offers, affiliates, seasonal promotions, the website, and our numbers. He helps me see how all of those pieces work together.

The website work has been a big part of that. But he doesn't just focus on making the site look better. He thinks about how customers actually use it, what motivates them to buy and stay subscribed, and how the entire customer experience can support the larger goals of the business.

He has also helped me move from constantly thinking about what I need to do next to thinking much more strategically about where I want the business to be and what we need to do to get there. We set goals, look at the numbers, map out a plan, and then break that plan down into things I can actually implement.

That shift has been huge for me. I feel like I'm no longer just reacting to the business. I'm actually building it with a long-term vision in mind. And I've been able to make decisions I probably wouldn't have considered before because I can see how they fit into the bigger strategy.

Alex has become much more than a website developer or business consultant for me. He really feels like a strategic partner who understands my business, understands my customers, and is invested in helping me grow. Having someone who can see the big picture while also helping me figure out what to actually do next has been incredibly valuable.

Why This Matters

The proof you can verify vs. the proof you cannot.

As of the date of writing, The Subscription Agency's 'Client Stories' wall does not hold up to a basic check. The faces are AI-generated defaults, and at least one 'founder' does not exist.

Documented · The Subscription Agency - Client Stories
The Subscription Agency's Client Stories testimonial section with eight cards and AI-generated headshots.

The Subscription Agency's published 'Client Stories' section, captured August 2026. Eight testimonials, each with a name, role, company, and a circular headshot of the generic, symmetrical kind AI website builders emit by default.

The headshots are the first tell - the synthetic portraits AI builders ship by default, not photographs of real clients. The names are the second. One card credits 'Lisa Gotravel, Founder, WanderKit.' WanderKit is a real company - but a search for its founder returns a different person entirely.

Documented · Google search - Lisa Gotravel Founder, WanderKit
Google search for Lisa Gotravel Founder WanderKit showing the real CEO is Shushana Susie Jiang, not Lisa Gotravel.

A Google search for 'Lisa Gotravel Founder, WanderKit' (August 2026). The AI Overview reports WanderKit's actual co-founder and CEO as Shushana 'Susie' Jiang, with Mike Gottlieb as co-founder and investor - and notes 'Lisa Gotravel' is likely a pseudonym. Source cited: a Medium investigation by Sam McCabe.

A subscription agency selling trust publishes testimonials you can verify - real founders, at real companies, who will take your call. The Subscription Agency's wall fails that test as of the date of writing: synthetic faces, and at least one 'founder' whose name belongs to no one. We hold ourselves to the standard they do not.
